为创设一种“精英政治”的考选方法，宋代初期改革了科举制度，发展了政府学校。其结果是考生数目急剧增加，考试竞争随之益趋激烈。为通过“棘闱”，作弊和行贿流行，同时专门为 官员的亲戚所设的简易考试（别试和牒试）也应运而生。然而，科举性质的不公并未阻碍一些因考试而引发的社会文化发展。有鉴于此，本书着重论述了作为一种既得利益集团的士人阶层的出现，以及有其独特的规范、象征和经验的考试文化。宋代考试和学校的改革对后世影响深远，不仅奠定了明清科举文化与学校、书院的基础，而且传入西方后，为启蒙哲学家们重塑西方社会提供了有力的分析与借鉴模式。

Moreover...examination was (not) the completely dependent variable...even as marriage could aid one in the examinations, so could examination success be of benefit for social climbing through marriage.
