Adam Smith was born in a small village in Kirkcaldy, Scotland in 1723. He entered the University of Glasgow at age fourteen, and later attended Balliol College at Oxford. After lecturing for a period, he held several teaching positions at Glasgow University. His greatest achievement was writing The Wealth of Nations (1776), a five-book series that sought to expose the true causes of prosperity, and installed him as the father of contemporary economic thought. He died in Edinburgh on July 19, 1790.

农村为城市提供生活资料及制造业原材料，城市则向农村居民返回一部分制成品，以偿还农村的这一供应。

比起农村居民试着自己生产制成品，若他们从城市购买，可以付出较少的劳动而能得到更多制成品。城市为乡村的剩余产品---即超过维持耕种者生存的东西---提供市场，正式在这个市场中，乡村居民用剩余产品来交换到自己需要的其他东西。城市居民的人数越多，收入越大，为乡村居民提供的市场也就越大；这种市场越大，就越是有利于大多数人。

按照事物发展的本性，生存优先于便利和奢华，所以，促进前者的产业，亦必优先于促进后者的产业。提供生活资料的农村的耕种和改良，必然先于只提供便利品和奢侈品的城市的发展。只有农村有了剩余产品，换言之，超过维持耕种着生存的部分，城市才能获得其生活资料，所以，城市只能随着农村剩余产品的增加而发展。

如果这个社会没有获得足够的资本去耕种他的所有土地，完完全全制造它的全部天然产物，那么，由外国资本来输出天然产物甚至有着相当大的好处，以便这个社会的全部资本可以投入最有用的目的中去。

因此，根据事物的自然进程，每一个发展中的社会，其大部分资本首先应当投入农业，然后投入制造业，最后才投入对外贸易。

一般人认为，分工最完全的制造业，乃是一些极不重要的制造业。不重要制造业的分工，实际上并不比重要制造业的分工更为周密。但是，目的在于供给少数人小量需要的不重要制造业，所雇用的劳动者人数，必然不多，而从事各部门工作的工人，往往可集合在同一工厂内，使观察者能一览无遗。

劳动生产力上最大的增进，以及运用劳动时所表现的更大的熟练、技巧和判断力，似乎都是分工的结果。

在进步的社会中，农民一般只是农民，制造者只是制造者。而且，生产一种完全制造品所必要的劳动，也往往分由许多劳动者担任。

贫国的耕作，尽管不及富国，但贫国生产的小麦，在品质优良及售价低廉方面，却能在相当程度上与富国竞争。但是，贫国在制造业上不能和富国竞争；至少在富国土壤气候位置适宜于这类制造业的场合，贫国不能和富国竞争。

有了分工，同数劳动者就能完成比过去多得多的工作量，其原因有三：第一，劳动者的技巧因业专而日进；第二，由一种工作转到另一种工作，通常须损失不少时间，有了分工，就可以免除这种损失；第三，许多简化劳动和缩减劳动的机械的发明，使一个人能够做许多人的工作。

人由一种工作转到另一种工作时，通常要闲逛一会儿。在开始新工作之初，势难立即精神贯注地积极工作，总不免心不在焉。而且在相当时间内，与其说他是在工作，倒不如说他是在开玩笑。闲荡、偷懒、随便这种种习惯，对于每半小时要换一次工作和工具，而且一生中几乎每天必须从事二十项不同工作的农村劳动者，可说是自然会养成的，甚而可说必然会养成的。这种种习惯，使农村劳动者常流于迟缓懒惰，即在非常吃紧的时候，也不会精神勃勃地干。所以，纵使没有技巧方面的缺陷，仅仅这些习惯也一定会大大减少他所能完成的工作量。

哲学家或思想家的任务，不在于制造任何实物，而在于观察一切事物，所只他们常常能够结合利用各种完全没有关系而且极不类似的物力。
